(It is important that you understand the difference between Vision Insurance/Plans and Medical Insurance.

Your vision plan (VSP and EyeMed) covers  routine well-exams only (nearsightedness, farsightedness, and normal astigmatism) which includes the refraction to determine your eyeglass prescription. Vision plans are primarily for routine eye exams, glasses and contact lenses only. Your plan may provide discounts or allowances towards eyeglass frames, lenses, or contact lenses. The goal of a routine eye exam is to prove that your eyes are healthy and to discover unknown problems.

If your eye exam involves a medical condition, such as pinkeye, glaucoma, dry eyes, cataracts, floaters, diabetes or pain, this office visit can be billed to medical insurance, not a vision plan

The good news is that your Medical Insurance can be used when an eye-related medical problem, or complications from diabetes or high blood pressure is found during the course of the eye examination. You do not need a vision benefits rider on your medical insurance to be covered for a medical eye condition.

At times it can seem like a complicated process, but these are the rules set by the insurance companies. We would be happy to answer any questions that you may have about your insurance coverage.
